Description:
Only since 9th November 1989 has Berlin been able to
grow back into one city again, in which however the
wounds of the past are still visible.
Starting from the Brandenburg Gate and
past the holocaust memorial we jog through the Wilhelmstrasse,
where many ministries of the Nazi-regime where situated,
i.e. the Reichskanzlei (the news reichs chancellery)
of Adolf Hitler. Herrmann Goering's former ministry
of aviation is right next to the memorial site Topography
of Terror, where in the Reichssicherheitshauptamt
(Central Office for the Security of the Reich) Hitler's
dreaded Special Forces Troup SS had its headquarters.
The basement vault can still be seen today. Directly
adjacent: Remains of the Berlin wall, marked by the
work of the so called "Mauerspechte (Wall-Woodpeckers).
In the embassy-quarter in the Tiergarten-Park
our next etappe - the beautifully redecorated buildings
of those countries which where amongst the allies of
the Nazi regime can be seen. Back through the Tiergarten,
past the Victory Column, which, under the Nationalsocialists,
was moved from its original location in front of the
Reichstag to the Großer Stern square, the tour
ends at the Reichstag. Like no other building it is
a symbol of the eventful history of Germany. Only a
few steps lead us back to the Brandenburg Gate, past
the crosses which remind of the former GDR citizens
who where shot dead while trying to climb the wall.
